Bajirao Mastani

Had watched this movie a month ago. Since then, I have been wanting to write my thoughts .
Finally, today I am penning down my thoughts on the movie.

Undoubtedly it's wonderful treat for the eyes, after all a Sanjay Leela Bhansali Film !
The sets are magnificent and same goes with all the actors.

I came across many reviews both from film critics and friends that they expected the movie to show more battles and other brave aspects of Bajirao's life. But isn't not the title itself clarifies that the story will mainly revolve around the love story of Bajirao and Mastani (his lover/second wife).
And also the maker of the movie clarified the same from the beginning of the film. May be that's the reason I was not disappointed with the plot of the movie. Being a typical Indian woman, I was waiting eagerly to see the intense mad love story of a pair from medieval era.

Well, I was waiting to feel and experience the love story of Bajirao and Mastani . What I ended up is connecting to the character of Kashibai and flowing with her character and emotions throught out the movie. What a tragic love triangle (all love triangles are tragic !). History says that Bajirao and Kashibai were married off to each other at a very young age and they almost grew up together like friends. In our childhood, we ourselves do not know who we will grow up to be   and what our ambitions and dreams will be. So the concept of child marriage should completely be banned. As it's the woman in the marriage who suffers. Bajirao and Kashibai grew up together being great friends, companion and life partners. But then Bajirao was a great warrior who was exposed to the outside world. Whereas Kashi, was surrounded only by her in laws, family and husband. She had no world other than Bajirao and his family. Her heart/mind could never imagine of anything else. Her identity was Bajirao s one and only companion.Same applies to most of our Indian women even today !
Bajirao comes across the beautiful, extra ordinary and multi talented Mastani (daughter of a Hindu king and Muslim mother). Bajirao loses his heart to Mastani and is mesmerized by her talents. Eventually both fall madly in love with each other. Believing in age old traditions Mastani considers herself to be married to Bajirao and reaches Pune (Bajirao's adobe). Inspite of all hindrances, insults Mastani endures them all and is strongly determined to stay there. What a brilliant performance by Deepika. She potrays  Mastani in the most able and appropriate way. I was flowing with the intense love story b/w Bajirao and Mastani. What an intense relation, power packed dialogues, classical dances and Sanjay Sir's signature sets.
But then it's an instant connect when Kashibai comes to screen. Though Kashibai's screen presence is limited , but that's the character a woman can connect instantly to. What's her mistake in the whole intense love story b/w Bajirao and Mastani? She was tied to the relation of Marriage at a very young age ? She was not exposed to the outer world ? History has forgotten Kashibai, her pain, her feelings, her story. Inspite of being a dutiful, beautiful wife, she could not get her one and only wish. Her only wish/desire/dream/ambition was to be her husband's one and only companion throughout. What  pain a woman has to undergo (specially one like Kashibai), when her ailing husband even at death bed longs for some other woman. Even at that age, though Kashibai's only world was Bajirao , she maintains her self respect and puts across her words ''No complaints, you have fallen in love with another woman, I cannot do anything about it but do not ever again step into my door steps". Divorce of that age ?? :) Priyanka Chopra just gets it right and for me she s done better justice to her role.
Wonderful acting by Tanvi Azmi - played the character of Bajirao's mother. Her character is very interesting as well. No doubt like every mother she is proud of her son and her son is the apple of her eyes. But unlike most women of her age, she equally loves her daughter-in -law. She feels Kashibai's pain, stands for her and even goes against her son. Well most of the historians would say, she was against Mastani because of her Muslim roots. I would like to believe that she was against her, because she herself was a woman and supported a woman when she was wronged. A power packed performance by Tanvi.
Finally Bajirao. Yes Ranveer did quite a commendable job. The action sequences and songs were well done by him. But the role had much more scope of acting. The scenes which were emotional, could have been done much better. Shahrukh or Hrithik would have done a better justice to the emotional scenes.
All in all, it's a nice film and worth a watch :)
